PAIR OF NEW HAMPSHIRE SAMPLERS.
Wrought by sisters Mary and Betsy French, Sandown Township, Rockingham County, 1829 and 1833, silk on linen. The same teacher appears to have instructed both sisters even if they attended school at different times. The design varies only slightly, both include figures of young women flourishing flowering branches at birds perched on hillocks, fruit trees, and short verses all surrounded by sawtooth and diamond borders. Mary's sampler has slightly softer colors. Conservation mounted and framed. 21 1/2"h. 21"w. (Mary), 20"h. 21 1/2"w. (Betsy). Ex Walter E. Simmons (Michigan). Most of what is known about the sistersÆ immediate family is revealed in the accompanying watercolor and inked family record signed by J. Phillips Payson on June 29th,1834. Mary and Betsy (Elizabeth) were the seventh and eighth of the nine children born to William French and Phebe Mitchel. Sandown natives, William (b.1778) and Phebe (b.1779) were married July 23, 1803. Their first child arrived the following year; the last in1823. Mary was born February 28, 1818. Betsy was born on January 10, 1821. All were living in 1834 when the family tree was made. The historical record trails off going forward, but the accompanying research traces the family back to 1584. Historical research accompanies the lot.
