ENGLISH SAMPLER.
Mary Jones, Shropshire,1821, silk on wool. A sturdy gold and ivory checkerboard house sits front and center among potted and vining flowers, butterflies and rooftop birds. Beneath the house a hatted man astride a white horse follows a pair of small spotted dogs, trailing a large stag. Mary signed and dated her sampler "The work of Mary Jones in the 12th year of her age 1821". Minor loss to wool ground. Conservation mounted and framed. 18 ?"h. 13 ?"w. Fortunately Mary included the names of her parents and her birth date, November 27, 1809, which makes it possible to locate her in the historical record. Richard Jones and Sarah Lescot were married October 1804, at Bishops Castle, Shropshire, and Mary was christened in nearby Stottesdon in December 1809.
