Rachel Skiles, probably Lancaster County, 1806, silk on linen. Using motifs found in many Pennsylvania-German examples, Rachel filled her sampler with colorful stylized flowers placed in urns and vases, pairs of tulips, roses, bluebirds and two roosters face each other under a blooming tree. She signed it ôRachel Skiles her sampler made in the 14th year of her age 1806ö. Minor imperfections. Conservation mounted and framed. 14öh. 14öw.

Rachel was one of five children of William (1751-1837) and Rachel (1756-1831) Skiles of Salisbury Township, Lancaster County. At the age of 18 or 19, she married Samuel Martin and died before 1876 without any recorded children.

Several samplers from the Lancaster/Chester County area share similarity. The Chester County Historical Society owns a virtually identical 1806 sampler made by RachelÆs sister, Elizabeth. The earliest known Chester County samplers, made in 1765 by the Hoopes sisters, incorporate a very similar vase and flower motif. See lot 161 in this auction for Jane Hoopes' sampler and Margaret SchifferÆs Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania, p.24, for Lydia Hoopes' sampler.

Historical research accompanies the lot.
