EARLY PENNSYLVANIA SAMPLER.
Jane Hoopes, Goshen, Chester County, 1765, wool on linen. Bright, colorful bands of alphabets, numbers with multi-petaled flower, cross and heart designs. "Jane Hoopes the daughter of John Hoopes and Christian his wife made her sampler in the 12th year of her age 176[5] [M]ars..[tt] Hollis School Mrs in Goshen finished October 23 th 1765". Also included are the initials of family members and friends. Slight imperfections. Conservation mounted and framed. 15 3/4"h. 10 3/4"w. One of two of the earliest known Chester County samplers. Remarkably, the other is the almost identical sampler made by her younger sister, Lydia, done in the same year and school. John Hoopes (1711-1795) and Christian (1718-1800), both descended from early Quaker settlers of Chester County, were married in 1743. Jane born February 1754, was the seventh of nine children. In 1776, she married Randal Malin (1750-1821), a local prosperous Quaker farmer. They had one son, John, in whose home she died in 1831, at the age of 77.
