OHIO SAMPLER.
Mary Ann Reeder, C.V.B. Schenck's School, Franklin, Warren County, 1820, silk on linen. Mary Ann 's sampler shares characteristics with other samplers made under the tutelage of Catherine Schenck; white steepled church, zigzag vine border, the verse, and an overflowing basket . Good color. Minor loss. Conservation mounted and framed. 15"h. 20"w. Positive attribution as to which Mary Reeder is the maker is somewhat difficult. There are three possible girls, of likely age, living within a reasonable distance. After thorough research, the most likely maker is Mary Ann Reeder born in 1805 in Lebanon, Warren County. Her name is listed in both historical records and the census as Mary Ann. The other two possibilities either have no middle name listed or an entirely different one. For additional samplers made at C.V.B. Schenck School see Sue Studebaker's works: 'Ohio Samplers Schoolgirl Embroideries, 1803-1850', fig. 1-4 and 'Ohio Is My Dwelling Place', pgs.47-50 and p.60. The extensive research done on all three possible makers is included with the sampler. Condition reportCondition: Some loss to darker threads in alphabet and church windows. A few holes in ground. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by our Conditions of Sale.
