PORTRAIT OF A MOTHER AND CHILD BY CHARLES AUGUSTUS JOHN (NEW YORK, 1821-AFTER 1885).
Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated 1846. A very charming portrait of a mother, wearing a black dress and a sideways cameo, and her daughter, wearing a coral necklace and holding a rattle. Imperfections. 36"h. 28"w., in a modern frame, 41"h. 33"w.

John is listed in the 1884-85 business directory in New York as "artist". Prior to working in New York, John taught drawing in Baltimore.

Condition: Moderate to significant inpainting throughout the painting, incluidng on the faces, relined.
