PENNSYLVANIA SAMPLER.
Maria Miller, Franklin County, 1837, silk on linen. Eight-year-old Maria carefully noted her location and the exact date: "guilford Township Franklin County In the state of pennsylvania", "June 24 1837" as well as a verse entitled Wish. The closely woven ground is worked with tiny cross-stitches in typical Pennsylvania German motifs consisting of stylized symmetrical floral and geometrics, the whole enclosed by finely worked sawtooth and zigzag borders. Slight imperfections. Conservation mounted and framed. 16"h. 13"w.

Genealogical research indicates the stitched initials "JM" and "SM" stand for Maria's parents, Jacob Miller (1795-1854) and Susanna Doolabaum Miller (1800-1872). Swiss born Jacob migrated to the United States as a small child and by 1818 was living in Franklin County, where he married a local girl. Maria, born in 1829, was one of 12 children and with her family moved sometime in the late 1840s to Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Apparently other Franklin County residents, possibly also associated with Church of the Brethren, a German Baptist church, removed to Mt. Carroll during the same time period. Maria married Henry Stricker, born 1827 in Franklin County, in December of 1850. They were the parents of at least eight children, the last three born in Iowa. Maria died at the age of 73.

Historical research accompanies the lot.
