MASSACHUSETTS FAMILY RECORD SAMPLER.
Sibbel Farrar, Winchendon,Worcester County, 1821, silk on linen. Worked into the center panel is a record of Sibbel's parents' births and wedding dates as well as the births of their four children. She inscribed the bottom "Wrought by Sibbel Farrar aged 14 years" and enclosed the panel with a narrow border. Beneath this, under willow branches she recorded her 1 1/2 year-old brother Dennis's death. An architecturally detailed house, complete with window moldings and door panels, is flanked by two trees and under a sky of flying plump black birds. A towering pole topped with what appears to be a birdhouse has a cat nosing around the base. The whole is bordered on three sides by vining roses and a narrow sawtooth border. Good bright colors on a clean ground. Conservation mounted and framed. 21 1/4"h. 19 3/4"w. Ex Garth's, September 3, 2004, lot 586.

Sibbel descended from an early Massachusetts family, Farrars having settled there in the 17th century. Her parents, Daniel Farrar (1784-1862) and Rebecca Stoddar (b.1786), married 1804 in Winchendon where they raised their children. Sibbel, the second child, was born September 28, 1807, three months after her brother's death. She married Luke Brown (1806), a Winchendon farmer, in 1832. The 1850 census lists them as living in Winchendon, parents of two sons. Luke alone is listed in the 1880 census, living with a son and his family.

Sibbel created a classic Family Record sampler. The form peaked in popularity between 1810 and 1830, and the majority of American examples were made in Massachusetts.
