PENNSYLVANIA SAMPLER.
Maria Imboden, Annville, Lebanon County, 1836, silk on linen. After stitching several sets of alphabets and numbers, eleven-year-old Maria filled the remaining space with blooming trees, birds, a basket topped with pears and a butterfly. She also included a single realistic pear artistically shaded and complete with stem and a leaf. She signed her work in a floral wreath. ôMaria Imboden Aged 12 1836ö. Good strong colors. Small areas of slight toning. Period frame with applied half columns. Conservation mounted and framed. 16 ?"h.15"w.

MariaÆs father, John Imboden (1791-1829), died before she was four years old. Her mother, Elizabeth Carmany Imboden (1797-1869), is listed in the 1830 Annville, Lebanon County U.S. Census as a widow with five young children. Three years later she married Christian Heilman. The family remained in the Annville area. Maria became the second wife of Henry S. Gilbert sometime after 1845. No children with the Gilbert name are included in the census but various young children are recorded as living with them. MariaÆs occupation is listed as milliner. She died in 1881 at the age of 56.
