MAINE FAMILY RECORD SAMPLER.
Member of the Davis family, Demark, Oxford County, late 1820s, silk on linen. Although the maker did not claim ownership, she clearly stated the purpose of her work, stitching the title "Genealogy" above the detailed family register. The stylized floral border runs across the top and down one side. The opposite side records the short life of her youngest sister and the maker may have been in the process of stitching her sampler when the six-day-old Mary died. Her little brother Ezra's birth and death dates are also recorded in black thread. The maker worked a tiny little house after her second brother named Ezra's birth date. Expected color loss to pink and yellow. Conservation mounted and framed. 16 1/2"h. 16 1/2"w. Ex Garth's, May 14, 1977, lot 532.

Probably stitched by Elizabeth Davis (b.1816) the youngest daughter of William Davis (1782-1851) and Clarissa Carleton Davis (1781-ca.1875). Her two older sisters, Clarissa (b.1809) and Emma (b.1812) would have been past the age of most schoolgirls by the late 1820s. The Davises, originally from New Hampshire, moved to Demark shortly after their 1808 marriage where their ten children were born. The maker included the birthplace of all her nine siblings as well as her parents.

Historical research accompanies the lot.
