ENGLISH SAMPLER.
Maria Mays, England,1816, silk on wool. Ten-year-old Maria worked her brightly colored depiction of the temptation of Adam and Eve under the snake entwined apple tree. Two-tone stags with red eyes observe the scene. Angels floating above, bluebirds, stylized flowering trees, a religious verse on keeping the commandments complete the design. "Maria Mays Aged 10. 25 October 1816". Imperfections. 12"h. 12 ?"w. Conservation mounted and framed. 15 ?"h. 17"w., in an old wood frame with crazed finish. A piece of a 19th century English newspaper, found when reframed, is included.

Condition: Scattered insect holes in ground fabric. Light color transfer in areas with blue thread. Loss and repair in lower corner.
