ENGLISH SAMPLER.
Martha Newbury, 1821, silk on wool. Martha filled her sampler with finely detailed motifs worked in tiny stitches. Mirrored pairs of lions, pine trees, butterflies, spotted deer, and potted flowers surround Adam and Eve with apple and snake. A face peers out a window in the house flanked by two figures. The blue lettering records a religious verse and the maker's name, age "Aged 9 Years" and the date. Bright colors on clean ground. Slight imperfections. Framed. 18 1/2" h. 15 1/2"

Condition: A few tiny holes and an old mend to hemsitiched edge.
