OHIO SAMPLER.
Elizabeth Mary Kline, Eaton, Preble County, 1832, silk on linen. Rows of alphabets neatly worked in a variety of stitches. Signed on the bottom with her name and "Born October 17th 1822. Aged 10 Years", followed by a short religious verse. Good color on a clean ground. Framed. 24"h. 18"w. Found in Eaton, Ohio. The maker is probably the daughter of Pennsylvania born Jacob Kline (1795-1875) who married Kentucky born Margaret Seller (1786-1879) in Indiana in 1821. By the time of Elizabeth Mary's birth they had moved across the state border to Eaton. Three other children followed, the two boys William and George reaching adulthood and working in their father's wagon making business. Elizabeth Mary died at the age of 17 in December of 1839. See Lot 533 for another sampler, dated 1831, made by Mary Elizabeth Kline, most likely the same girl, as they give the identical birth date.
