TWO SAMPLERS.
Nancy Squier, probably Pennsylvania or New Jersey, 1828, silk on linen. Wide stylized floral borders surround divided bands of alphabets over a religious verse and signed "Nancy Squier April 1828". Minor loss to ground. Framed. 18 3/4"h. 18 3/4"w. The likely maker was born in 1817, in Essex County, New Jersey, to Stephen and Margaret Squier. Her parents were New Jersey natives but had moved to Wyoming County, Pennsylvania, by 1796 at the time their fifth child was born. Margaret may have been visiting New Jersey when Nancy, the last of twelve children, was born. Together with an1834 sampler by Jane Dunbar. Tan silk on linen with sets of alphabets, a religious verse and cross-stitched border. Framed. 16"h. 11 1/2"w.
