QUEEN ANNE BONNET-TOP HIGH CHEST OF DRAWERS.
Western Massachusetts, mid 18th century, curly walnut and pine. Full bonnet, six graduated drawers in the upper section and one over three in the lower section, and resting on folksy cabriole legs ending in pad feet. Retains its original brasses, its original carved pine cone finial, and an older crazed varnish finish. Minor imperfections. 87"h. 42 3/4"w. 18 3/4"d. Ex Jess Mallow (Ohio). Several distinctive features of the present high chest include the piecing of the knees (see Jobe and Kaye, New England Furniture: The Colonial Era, number 32), the use of thumbmolded edges on flush-fit drawers (see The Estate of George L. Considine, Willem and Inger Lemmens, June 26-28, 1986, lot 184), and, of course, the carved pine cone finial. Condition reportCondition: Older finish with crazed varnish, original brasses, original finial, minor repair to finial plinth, scattered minor repairs, a few areas of surface imperfection, one missing and one repalced drop.
