CHARMING ANNIVERSARY WHIMSY.
Ohio, early 20th century. Small marble book carved for Matilda McKay Sosman and her husband, William Sosman, in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, dated 1862 and 1912. 1"h. 2 3/4"w. 2 1/4"d., in a modern display case. William (a baker) and Matilda appear in the Federal Census in Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, from 1870 until 1910. Interestingly, on this anniversary present, Sosman is identified as "Capt. Sosman 22 O.V.I.", suggesting that this charming whimsy may have been a present to the couple by someone who served with Sosman during the Civil War. Sosman served two tours: a four-month stint in 1861 where he was promoted from private to 1st Sergeant, and a one-year (from September 1861 to September 1862) stint as captain, both in the 22nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. During his time with the 22nd OVI, Sosman saw action at Fort Donelson and Shiloh. Condition reportCondition: Some wear, soiling, and residue. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid. All transactions are governed by our Conditions of Sale.
