DECORATED STEPBACK CUPBOARD.
Soap Hollow, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, mid 19th century, poplar. Two-piece cupboard with two 6-pane doors in the upper section and two drawers over two doors in the lower section, all resting on bracket feet. Retains its original black and red paint decoration with gold stenciling, and an original blue paint in the upper interior. Imperfections. 86 1/4"h. 62 1/4"w. 16 1/4"d.

Though unsigned, this cupboard relates to two other Soap Hollow cupboards, one signed by Jeremiah Stahl (see Muller, Soap Hollow: The Furniture and Its Makers, p. 44) and one signed by Peter K. Thomas (See Muller, p. 82). The present cupboard and the Stahl cupboard have the same rectangular stenciled motif at the center of the cornice. Additionally, the present cupboard utilizes a ring of hash marks around a stenciled motif as does the cupboard illustrated in Muller. Also, the present cupboard and the Thomas cupboard have similarly shaped skirts and similar turnings on the quarter columns. In terms of its manufacture, Thomas is the likely hand.

Condition: Reglazed, missing 3 of 4 plate rails, traces of green paint on the upper section, pieced repairs to the cornice, other wear and losses, some refreshening of some of the paint.
