PENN, William. Engraved indenture on vellum, with manuscript insertions, signed and sealed by Penn, the leasehold of five thousand acres in Pennsylvania to William Shardlow "of London, Merchant" for one year, in exchange for five shillings. N.p. [but London]: 13 April 1682. 1p., vellum membrane with scalloped top edge (360 x 480 mm). Signed by Penn on the fold, with attached wax seal. Witnessed and signed by Herbert Springett, Thomas Griffiths, and Thomas Coxe on the verso. Docketed on the verso. First purchaser William Shardlow (c.1624-1704; alt. spellings Sharlow, Sharloe or Sherlow) was a member of a Levant Company as well as a subscriber to the Free Society of Traders and "an original member of the company's council in England (Papers of William Penn, II: p. 254). His tract was surveyed by Holme and located on the west side of the Schuylkill, approximately six miles north of Philadelphia, located in present day Lower Merion Township. As the purchaser of such a large lot, he received bonus lots in the city located on both the northeast and southeast corners of High (i.e. Market) and 7th Streets, in addition to a smaller lot on Front Street.
