DICKINSON, Jonathan. Engraved vignette on the title, engraved folding map, 3 engraved folding plates. Modern quarter calf, raised bands. Condition: foxing to the folding plates. first illustrated edition of dickinson's famous shipwreck and captivity narrative god's protecting providence. First published in Philadelphia in 1699, that edition is prohibitively rare; the next two editions published in London in 1700 and the year following are both seldom encountered. This first dutch edition followed and is the first to include illustrations. The map, engraved by Aa and oriented with south to the east, principally depicts the southeast and the West Indies and includes a small vignette of the shipwreck and the survivors on the Florida beach. The three engraved plates are unsigned (but presumably by Aa); the first two depict the capture of Dickinson and his companions and the third shows their safe arrival at Charleston.
