Although Philadelphia's Quakers were among the earliest settlers, by the second quarter of the 18th century they were quickly becoming a minority largely due to a massive influx of German settlers. Three principal Christian denominations competed with one another, Reformed, Lutherans and Moravians. "[Count Nicholas] Zinzendorf arrived in Pennsylvania in late Dec., 1741, with plans to unite the various German sects ... representatives of a number of groups met initially on Jan. 1, 1741-42, in Germantown to discuss the proposal. Zinzendorf's efforts at unity failed, but of the numerous meetings held, accounts of seven were published" (Miller). Although issued with continuous pagination, the seven tracts were published separately. The present tracts are the first and fifth in the series, respectively. All are uncommon.
