Philadelphia: Benjamin Franklin, 1742. 42 pp., 12mo (126 x 80 mm). Printed in Roman type. Later panelled calf. Condition: minor rubbing at extremities. the first german catechism published in america. "The need of a catechism for the use of all who were in union with the 'Pennsylvania Synod' early became apparent, whereupon Zinzendorf and Bechtel, in March of 1742, began its compilation, based on the twelve articles adopted by the Bern Synod of 1532, in which a tendency towards Lutheranism is manifest, and by some was claimed to be in harmony with the doctrines of the Moravian Church. The manuscript was read in a session of the 'Fifth Pennsylvania Synod,' approved, and ordered to be printed" (John W. Jordan, "John Bechtel: His Contributions to Literature" in PMHB, vol. 19, no. 2). This little volume is also notable as being one of relatively few Franklin imprints containing his full name. Campbell 235; Evans 4889; Hildeburn 750; Miller 309; Sabin 4223.
