"The Quaker Thomas Chalkley, who died in 1741 during a preaching mission at Tortola in the West Indies, requested in his will that the Philadelphia Meeting edit and print his writings" (Miller). Besides his sermons, the volume includes the publication of his journal which contains much detail on his travels preaching to Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and New England, as well as voyages to the West Indies.
