Philadelphia: B. Franklin and D. Hall, 1749. 2 parts in one volume, thick 8vo (180 x 120 mm). Contemporary sheep, covers blind tooled with a double fillet, rebacked to style. Condition: foxing and browning, restoration to the title; recased with endpapers renewed, boards worn. first american edition of a quaker classic. "The Quaker Thomas Chalkley, who died in 1741 during a preaching mission at Tortola in the West Indies, requested in his will that the Philadelphia Meeting edit and print his writings" (Miller). Besides his sermons, the volume includes the publication of his journal which contains much detail on his travels preaching to Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and New England, as well as voyages to the West Indies.
