THORNTON, John and William FISHER (after). Virginia, Maryland, Pennsilvania, East & West New Jersey. London: Mount & Page, [c. 1743 or later]. Engraved map (510 x 805 mm). Condition: tissue-backed closing separations at folds and other edge tears. a decorative depiction of the mid-atlantic coast from the famous english pilot. This fine sea chart, after Thornton and Fisher's 1689 original, is extracted from a mid-18th century edition of the fourth book of the English Pilot. Based on Augustine Herrman's important early mapping of the Chesapeake and Delaware Bay, the chart, oriented with north to the east, includes additional detail from Thomas Holme's map of eastern Pennsylvania. Although soundings are given within the difficult to navigate Delaware Bay, they presented little improvement over Herrman's earlier map. It would not be until Joshua Fisher's 1756 chart (and the numerous 18th century British and French copies) that accurate navigation of the bay was possible.
