DOUGLASS, William. A Summary, Historical and Political, Of the first Planting, progressive Improvements, and present State of the British Settlements in North-America. Boston: Rogers and Fowle, 1749; Boston: D. Fowle, 1753. 2 volumes, 8vo (200 x 125 mm). Near uniform contemporary full calf, spines with raised bands in five compartments with morocco gilt lettering pieces. Condition: lacks front free endpapers, some foxing and staining, vol. 2 title page torn; vol. 1 front joint starting, covers a bit worn. Provenance: Edward Livingston (early signature on vol. 1 title); Abel Rossiter (early signature in vol. 2). the first general history of the british colonies produced in america. First issued in parts (which are rarely encountered), this is a mixed set, with the first edition in book form of the first volume and a second edition, first issue of the second. The issuance of the second volume presents some bibliographical confusion. After appearing in parts, that volume was first published with a date of 1751 on the title, but was actually issued in 1752 after Douglass's death. The next edition, i.e. the present, was issued in 1753. Later issues of the second edition, probably published ca. 1758, contain an additional 24 pp. (not found in this copy). As the two volumes were issued separately, sets are rarely found complete, or are assembled such as the present set. A notable and widely disseminated publication by a learned Boston physician, but considered by many to be "a vast reservoir of untrustworthy information" (Howes). Evans 6307 and 6992; Howes D436; Sabin 20726.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
