HEAP, George. A View of the State House in Philadelphia. London: September 1752. Engraving (115 x 192 mm). Matted. Condition: lower margin uneven with small chips and losses. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "the first separate printed view of a philadelphia building" (Snyder). Heap's famous view of the Philadelphia statehouse first appeared as a large illustration surmounting his and Nicholas Scull's 1752 map of Philadelphia, published in that city by William Bradford and David Hall. "Perhaps Thomas Penn made his copy immediately available to the Gentleman's Magazine in London, for within three months of publication [of the map] that periodical issued a new engraving of the Statehouse elevation without the map below it" (Snyder).
