HEAP, George and Nicholas SCULL (after). An East Perspective View of the City of Philadelphia, in the Province of Pensylvania, in North America; taken from the Jersey Shore. London: Carington Bowles, c. 1780. Hand-colored engraved view (280 x 430 mm sight size). 14 numbered references in the lower margin. Nicely matted and framed. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "the most decorative of all the reissues of scull and heap's 1754 east prospect of philadelphia" (Snyder). Brightly hand-colored in a thick gouache, the engraving was intended by Bowles as part of a series of prints to be used in a peep show or optical viewer. Operating one of the largest print "warehouses" in London, Bowles was able to secure Heap's painting and this resulting print remains largely true to the original (albeit with sections of the shoreline and wharves truncated to maintain the standard size of the prints in the series). This copy is the second issue, with the first issue 1778 date at the end of the imprint erased, but prior to the Bowles & Carver imprint of 1794. a lovely copy of a rare and desirable view in an early state. Deak 101; Snyder, COI 100A (this copy illustrated as Colorplate 5).ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
