AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY. Transactions of the American Philosophical Society, held at Philadelphia, for promoting useful knowledge. Volume I. From January 1st, 1769, to January 1st, 1771.
Philadelphia: William and Thomas Bradford, 1771. 4to (235 x 180 mm). 7 engraved folding plates. Contemporary tree sheep, spine ruled in gilt with morocco lettering piece. Condition: minor foxing as usual; minor wear at extremities. Provenance: John Scouller (early booklabel); Michael Zinman (booklabel). the first volume of american philosophical society transactions. The work includes the Laws of the society, lists of officers and members (including its President and founder Benjamin Franklin) and articles by David Rittenhouse, John Ewing, William Smith, John Morgan, Benjamin Rush and others. Much of the scientific content in this first volume relates to the transit of Venus. Of particular interest is "An Abstract of sundry Papers and Proposals for improving Inland Navigation of Pennsylvania and Maryland" which is accompanied by a fine map engraved by J. Smither. Copies in their lovely original bindings and complete with all plates are the exception. Evans 11959; Rink 5; Sabin 1181; Wheat & Brun 300.
