LIBRARY COMPANY OF PHILADELPHIA. Partly-printed receipt for John Dickinson's annual subscription to the Library Company of Philadelphia. Philadelphia: 16 May 1776. 1 p. (66 x 172 mm). Signed by Library Company Treasurer Samuel Sansom. a patriot's 1776 membership in benjamin franklin's library company. Dickinson first purchased a share in the Library Company in 1762. By the time of this annual fee, he also had access to the famed library of Isaac Norris, having married Mary Norris in 1770. The day prior to this receipt, patriot Dickinson, best remembered as the author of Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania, was present as a delegate from Pennsylvania at the meeting of the Continental Congress when Virginia formally proposed independence.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
