FISHER, Thomas. Father Abraham's Pocket Almanack for the Year 1776. Philadelphia: John Dunlap, [1775]. 24 leaves, interleaved with 10 blanks, 12mo (110 x 60 mm). Marbled paper wrappers, disbound. Provenance: Thomas Fisher (contemporary manuscript notations on the blanks). contemporary recording of the first reading of the declaration of independence. Following his father-in-law's custom, Thomas Fisher (married to Sarah Logan) interleaved pocket almanacs for use as a diary. Many of the notations he has added to this almanac concern business, the weather, family births and deaths, and, most notably, important revolutionary events. Facing the July 1776 calendar page, Fisher writes "8[th]. Independance publickly declared at State house" and two days later records "Our militia marched to Trenton." Besides the importance of the manuscript additions, this almanac itself, printed by Declaration printer John Dunlap, is quite rare. OCLC records three copies (one defective?).
