[4], 228 pp., 8vo (195 x 120 mm). Together, 2 volumes. Near uniform contemporary calf, spines with raised bands and ruled in gilt, gilt-lettered W on first volume and G on the other. Housed together in cloth chemises and morocco backed slipcase. Condition: minor foxing; worn along extremities, front cover of second vol. detached. Provenance: Joseph Hiller (signature in first vol.); Naval Office, Port of Salem (blindstamp in first vol.). two early american military manuals, issued in philadelphia at the beginning of the war. These manuals, each English translations of earlier French works, were issued separately but were intended as a set by the publisher and are often found together. Joseph Hiller, the early owner of this copy of the Art of War, served as a Captain of a Salem company during Lexington and Concord and was later commissioned a Major in the Continental Army (and later as the Collector of Customs at Salem, explaining the blindstamp).
