London: Printed for Almon, 1778. Small folio (280 x 220 mm). Signed by Hartley at the end of the Introduction and the end of each letter (5 times total). Modern half calf, text uncut on two sides. Condition: title page soiled. first edition. signed five times by the author. Hartley (1732-1832) favored reconciliation with the colonies and would later be among those who negotiated the Treaty of Paris. This is his most desirable work, and went through eight editions in two years. The John Carter Brown Library holds a similar copy, signed at the end of each letter.
