[TRENCHARD, James?]. To the Patrons of the Columbian Magazine this Map of Pennsylvania is Dedicated.
[Philadelphia: 1788]. Engraved map (310 x 540 mm). References in the lower right corner, scale of miles in the lower margin. Condition: ample margins, expertly repaired tears, light browning and offsetting. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. a rare and ephemeral map of pennsylvania published in philadephia. This very rare American map of Pennsylvania was originally published in volume two of the Columbian Magazine. The engravings from that publication were largely done by James Trenchard, who was also one of its founders and described by Stauffer as "the artistic member of the firm." The map appears to be largely derivative of William Scull's 1770 map of the state, although with additional place names, counties and districts, particularly in the western portions of the state. Of note is the appearance in the lower left corner of "Part of Indiana." Copies of the magazine complete with its plates, especially this large folding map, are very much the exception. Phillips, p. 678; Wheat & Brun 426.
