FOLIE, A. P. To Thomas Mifflin Governor and Commander in Chief of the State of Pennsylvania this plan of the City and Suburbs of Philadelphia is respectfully inscribed by the Editor 1794. Philadelphia: [Richard Folwell?], 1794. Map engraved by Robert Scot and Samuel Allardice (660 x 670 mm). Sectioned and linen-backed at an early date. Engraved view of the Statehouse, with Congress Hall and the Supreme Court buildings. 64 numbered references. Condition: tissue-backed, light browning and soiling. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. the first large-scale map of philadelphia published while the capital of the new nation. Soon after publishing his famous map of Baltimore in 1792, cartographer A. P. Folie began surveying the capital city. Issued as a separate map to accompany Benjamin Davies' 1794 guide titled Some Account of the City of Philadelphia, the Folie map is both decorative and exacting in its detail. References clearly show the locations of the city's many churches and meetinghouses, as well as the "Jewish Synagogue" and the "African Meeting House." Other locations identified include the "President's house," the "New Playhouse," the Bank of the United States, Peale's Museum, John B. Rickett's circus, and many more. scarce. We could not locate a single copy of the map appearing at auction in the last quarter century. Although acquired from Martin Snyder, the present copy was not the one used as Fig. 106 in City of Independence.
