DIRECTORY - James ROBINSON. Robinson's Philadelphia Directory and City Register, for 1799.
Philadelphia: John Bioren, 1799. 12mo (170 x 96 mm). Publisher's ad in the rear. Contemporary wrappers, printed Editor's note affixed to the upper wrapper. Housed in a cloth chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. Condition: upper and lower corners restored to the first 8 leaves and the terminal signature, other corners rounded; rebacked and other restoration to the wrappers including portions supplied. Provenance: Edward Burd (signatures, other annotations). The note affixed to the front wrapper apologizes for the delay in publication, "occasioned by a desire to give the population of the city, which it was thought would too long delay the publication. It being provided by Congress that a census shall be taken in 1800, it is thought best not to publish the detached detail the Editor has made." This directory includes an almanac for the year in the rear. The early owner of this copy, Edward Burd, is listed within as the Register of the High Court of Errors and Appeals. a very rare directory. Evans 36238; Spear, p. 275.
