THOMSON, Charles (translator). The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Covenant, commonly called the Old and New Testament: Translated from the Greek.
Philadelphia: Jane Aitken, 1808. 4 volumes, 8vo (215 x 135 mm). Contemporary tree sheep, morocco gilt spine labels. Condition: minor wear and scuffing to the bindings. Provenance: Deborah Logan (several signatures and inscriptions, including "Deborah Logan's / August 21st 1809 / Presented by the greatly / esteemed / Translator"). "the first translation of the septuagint into the english language, and the first english translation of the nt in the western hemisphere" (Hills). Watson's Annals recounts that Thomson, the Secretary to the Continental Congress, purchased a copy of the Septuagint at a book auction, which led him to study Greek. "Thomson spent twenty years in making the translation ... After copying the manuscript four times, he had it published in Philadelphia by Jane Aitken, the first woman to print any part of the Holy Scriptures in America, and the daughter of the printer Robert Aitken" (Hills). a rare early american bible, with esteemed philadelphia provenance. Contemporary panelled speckled calf gilt, presentation binding. Condition: foxing; minor wear. Provenance: Mary Norris Logan (signature and inscription on the title, "presented to her by the venerable author").
