STRICKLAND, William. South Front of the Pennsylvania Hospital. [Philadelphia: c. 1811 but printed later?]. View engraved by Samuel Seymour, surmounting a separately engraved partly-printed student's certificate (the view 292 x 455 mm; the full sheet 640 x 510 mm). Printed on vellum. Certificate accomplished in a calligraphic hand and presented to William Watts Glentworth for practicing at the hospital for two years, signed by A. W. Johnston, Frederick Brown, William Pepper, George Norris and John Lewis and dated 17 April 1847. lovely view of pennsylvania hospital on vellum. In February 1811, the board of the hospital ordered that two views be commissioned for use on engraved student and contributor certificates. William Strickland, a noted artist and architect who had studied with Benjamin Henry Latrobe, accomplished his drawing for the former by April of that year and the hospital contracted for the view to be engraved by Seymour, and the text below by John Vallance. This view and plate were used for student certificates by the hospital for a long period of time, with this certificate for a graduate dated 1847.
