BARRALET, John James. View of the Water Works at Centre Square Philadelphia.
Philadelphia: c. 1812. Stipple engraving by Cornelius Tiebout, hand-colored (340 x 510 mm). Framed. Condition: light foxing. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. Arriving in Philadelphia from Ireland before the close of the 18th century, artist John James Barralet worked as an engraver before making his own paintings of Philadelphia and environs. For this large print the engraving was executed by Cornelius Tiebout and is considered one of the finest examples of his work. "This lovely classical building, built in 1800, was placed in a bucolic setting, enhanced by William Rush's 'Nymph of the Schuylkill,' which was erected in 1809. For years the park around the pump house was a popular attraction. The pump house was in operation until 1815" (Wohl Collection). Snyder, MOA 110; Wohl Collection 40.
