CRAMER, Zadok. The Navigator; Containing Directions for Navigating the Monongahela, Allegheny, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
Pittsburgh: Published & Sold by Cramer, Spear and Eichbaum; printed by Robert Ferguson & Co., 1814. 360 pp., 12mo (175 x 100 mm). 27 full-page engraved maps within the text showing the course of the rivers, paginated continuously with the text. Contemporary half sheep over marbled paper boards, spine stamped in gilt. Condition: small tear to the front blank, browning to the endpapers, else quite clean; spine darkened, minor wear. Provenance: N. Bruen (signature dated 1814); early owner's pencil annotations on the rear blank and on one map. "most widely used guide to western waters in the early period" (Howes). Identified on the title as the "Eighth Edition - Improved and Enlarged," this edition includes a lengthy Appendix and Addenda containing extracts from various journals of travellers, including Patrick Gass (a footnote on p. 344 refers to the publication of Lewis & Clark's official account of their expedition). Published numerous times between 1802 and 1824, this edition is noted as the largest published. The map of Pittsburgh, the first illustration and the only with the verso blank, is among the earliest printed plans dedicated to that city, and includes 12 numbered references described in the text. Well-used by travellers and commercial river captains, this guide is rarely found in good condition; this copy particularly pleasing. Howes C855; Sabin 17386.
