DOUGHTY, Thomas. To Joseph S. Lewis Esquire, This View of Fair Mount Works, is inscribed by a number of his fellow citizens as a tribute of respect and gratitude for the eminent service he has rendered to the City of Philadelphia. Philadelphia: c. 1827. Engraving by C. G. Childs (442 x 545 mm). Condition: expertly repaired tear in the image, othe repaired tears along plate mark and at edges, mat burn, light toning overall. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. The Philadelphia City Council commissioned this print to honor Joseph Lewis, Chairman of the Water Committee, after the completion of the Fairmount Waterworks. "It chose the form of an impressive engraving of the Works to be dedicated to him. Doughty's rendering of 1824 became the vehicle ... This was to be Child's largest engraved landscape view" (Snyder, MOA, p. 16). Childs would later use the image, with slight variations and in a much reduced fashion, in his 1827-30 Views of Philadelphia. "A bucolic view of the Fairmount Waterworks, combining the efforts of two of Philadelphia's great artists and engravers ... This separately issued print is one of the most desirable images of this important Philadelphia landmark" (Wohl Collection).
