LEHMAN, George. The Great Treaty Elm of Shackamaxon (Now Kensington) Under which William Penn concluded his Treaty with the Indians in 1682. [Philadelphia: c. 1827]. Aquatint, hand-colored (380 x 485 mm). Condition: trimmed to or just within the platemark, mat burn at edges. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "Perhaps [Lehman's] first work of importance is this lovely view of Philadelphia from Kensington ... The famous Treaty Tree stands majesically in the center, with the bustling port of Philadelphia seen in the distance beneath the tree's branches" (Wohl Collection). Below the image is a depiction of the marble obelisk erected in 1827 on the spot where the tree fell in a storm in 1810. first state. Later reissued by William Smith, with his imprint.
