GARNERAY, Louis. Vue du Port de Philadelphie. Paris and New York: Hocquart and Bailly, Ward and Co., c. 1835-1845. Aquatint engraved by Himely, hand-colored (370 x 480 mm). Framed. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "This sparkling marine view of Philadelphia looking to the west-northwest shows a harbor full of sailing ships even though the era of the steamboat had already begun. The city itself ... is reduced to a ribbon of buildings presenting a strong horizontal counterpoint to the vertical elegance of the high-masted vessels" (Deak). This aquatint was published in Garneray's Vues des Cotes de France dans l'Ocean et dans la Mediterranee (the final volume of which included ports in the Western Hemisphere). That rare work is acclaimed as "a magnificent collection of views'' (Deak, p. 291). This copy is the second state of the view, with the additional publication line.
