WILD, J. C. Panorama of Philadelphia. Views Taken from the State House Steeple. In Four Parts [wrapper title]. Philadelphia: J. C. Wild & J. B. Chevalier, 1838. 4 lithographed prints. Publisher's letterpress wrappers. Condition: very minor foxing and soiling to the views, some cellotape staining on verso slightly visible recto but in the margins; separations and chips to the wrappers. Provenance: Frederick Graff (signature on front wrapper); Martin P. Snyder. true first edition of wild's famous panoramic view of philadelphia from the state house steeple. Following the original publication of his views in parts, Wild announced the present panorama as a separate work, offered for sale at $1 and scheduled for publication in June of 1838 (although not completed until August). "Wild broke wholly new ground in American prints. Single views of cities from a distant vantage point were usual, but showing a whole city as it appeared in facing each point of the compass from a central spot was an innovation" (Snyder). This copy with esteemed contemporary provenance, from the library of Frederick Graff, the engineer and architect of the Fairmount Waterworks. Howes W410 "c"; Sabin 103971; Snyder, "J. C. Wild and His Philadelphia Views" in PMHB vol. 77, no. 1; Wainwright 264-267; Reps 3565-3568.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
