Near Phoenixville: October 1844 [but later?]. Pen-and-ink and wash, on paper (233 x 290 mm). Dated at the lower left, titled at the lower right. Framed. Condition: mounted. Attributed to Kollner by style and the title in his characteristic hand, this peaceful river scene is likely set near Valley Forge. Although dated October 1844, it is perhaps from a later date. "After his retirement from business, Kollner spent much time painting water colors, and occasionally oils, based on sketches he had drawn years before. Not infrequently, he would date the picture with the year the sketch was made to indicate that that was how the scene appeared at that time" (Wainwright).
