SCOTT, Thomas M. Commissioners Hall, Northern Liberties, Phila. Philadelphia: P.S. Duval & Co., c. 1852. Tinted lithograph, hand-finished (475 x 635 mm). Initialed on the stone by the lithographer C. Kuchel. Framed. Condition: light spotting. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "Two sleighs drive down a snowy street in front of a three-and-a-half-story building over which flies an American flag. Signs on the building read 'Police Station' and 'Mayor's Office.' In colonial times this building had served as a barracks for British army officers quartered in the city. Located on the east side of Third Street between Buttonwood and Green streets, it was acquired by the commissioners in 1814. The hall is depicted as it appeared on February 22, 1852. This lithograph was inspired by the view made in 1851 of Commissioners Hall, Spring Garden" (Wainwright). Wainwright 79.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
