KENNEDY, David J. Eleventh and Market Streets. Philadelphia: August 1852. Pen-and-ink, graphite, watercolor and goache, on paper (215 x 290 mm). Signed with initials and dated at the lower right. Condition: minor soiling, pin holes in the top margin. This view looking down Market Street from an elevated position on the northwest corner is principally a depiction of the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Railway Co. depot. and the Mansion House Hotel. Regarding the former, Scharf & Westcott explain: "Until 1842 the company owned no depot in Philadelphia. In that year . a large building extending along Eleventh Street from Market Street to Marble Alley was erected. The front part of the building on Market Street and the upper stories over all were used for the officers of the company and as a hotel. The cars found space in the first story, into which the railroad tracks were run. The cars were drawn by horses out Market Street to Broad and down the latter to Prime Street, where locomotives were attached" (Scharf & Westcott, p. 2182). This view shows a long line of horses coupled to railway cars exiting the depot. The streets include numerous pedestrians and carriages and the veranda of the American flag-adorned Mansion House Hotel is crowded with guests. Regarding the artist, see "The David J. Kennedy Collection" in PMHB, vol. 60, no. 1.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
