REASE, William H.; and F. SCHELL. Odd Fellows' Broadway Hall. Broad & Spring Garden Streets, Philadelphia.
Philadelphia: [c. 1855]. Color lithograph (435 x 540 mm). Condition: tissue-backed, some restoration, a few closed tears into image including a longer tear through the title, neat ink writing below title and on verso. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "The large building at the right displays initials 'I.O.O.F.' Other buildings are identified below the lower margin as Spring Garden Institute, Spring Garden Commissioners Hall, Church of the Assumption, and St. Marks Church. Broad Street is in the foreground. The Spring Garden Institute, similar in purpose to the Franklin Institute, was on the northeast corner of Broad and Spring Garden Streets. It was opened in November, 1852. Odd Fellows' Hall on the southeast corner was designed by Samuel Sloan and was completed in 1851. Built of brick painted to resemble brownstone, it was surmounted by statues of 'Charity' and 'Hope.' John McArthur, Jr., was the architect for St. Marks Lutheran Church whose cornerstone was laid in June, 1850. The fountain in the middle of Spring Garden Street was completed in 1853. With its public buildings and fine residences, Spring Garden Street between Thirteenth and Broad was considered one of the finest blocks in the city" (Wainwright). Wainwright 257.
