TRAUBEL, M. H. Gustavus Bergner's Lager Beer Brewery and Vaults Situate on the North Side of Thompson Street bel. 32nd on the Reading R.R., about 1/2 Mile above Fairmount. Philadelphia: M. H. Traubel, [c. 1857]. Color lithograph (480 x 580 mm). Condition: tissue-backed, short tear to right margin, one spot of soiling to lower margin. "Bergner's name appears on this brewery from which barrels of beer are being loaded on a wagon. Bergner moved to this location in 1857, and his firm remained there for many years. The name 'Xaver Ditsche, Builder' appears below the right corner of the print. Bergner's vaults held 6,000 barrels, containing 372,000 gallons of beer. Every winter the city's lager beer breweries made 100,000 barrels of beer and stored it away for the summer. The brewery shown in this print was destroyed by fire in 1866, but was immediately rebuilt. It was torn down in 1930" (Wainwright).
