REASE, William H. City Museum. Callowhill St. below Fifth St. Philadelphia.
Philadelphia: Wagner & McGuigan, c. 1858. Color lithograph (350 x 425 mm). Condition: some light browning. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. "Over this two-story building flies a large banner on which is the name 'City Museum.' The words 'Star Hall' are over an entrance at its left and a large star hangs above its closed center door. This place of entertainment, located on the north side of Callowhill Street between Fourth and Fifth, was opened in September, 1854. A museum of natural history, science, and portraits occupied the first floor, and the second floor was used as a theater. The venture was not notably successful. After the building had undergone several changes in use, it burned in 1868" (Wainwright). Wainwright 72.
