[With]: S.W. corner Del Avenue and Race St 1868. Mounted albumen print. 132 x 205 mm. Possibly by John Moran. Provenance: Joseph Jackson (pencil note on verso). Laid into the above. Joseph Y. Jeanes was among the best turn of the 20th-century Philadelphia collectors. Assembling an impressive library, which included original Audubon drawings (now located at Harvard), Jeanes was a notable member of the Library Company among other Philadelphia-area institutions. It appears that he collected these images over a long period, with internal evidence suggesting some to have come from historian Joseph Jackson and antiquary Ferdinand J. Dreer. Among the photographers represented are John Moran, the brother of the noted western artist. Moran, whose images display remarkable quality and composition, is considered among the most artistic photographers of the post-Civil War period. In 1875, he wrote of photography: "Art in all its forms is the form of thought, and the photographic work which rises to this plane is the expression of the ideas of the photographer. Nature in some sort becomes plastic to his touch, and he moulds her to his judgement; this, however, he does by selection rather than construction; this happy selection comes from the power to see the beautiful, and results from a highly trained taste" ("Thoughts on Art, Nature and Photography" in The Philadelphia Photographer, June 1875). While institutional holdings of these or similar images are substantial, most notably by the Library Company and the Free Library of Philadelphia, those collections were largely assembled at the same time that this album was compiled by Jeanes. Similar albums, or even individual images from this period, seldom come to market.
