BLANC, A. Works, East Schuylkill Falls. Powers & Weightman Manufacturing Chemists, Philadelphia. Established 1818. Philadelphia: Longacre & Co., c. 1860. Chromolithograph (370 x 510 mm). Condition: residue of former matting to margins. Provenance: Martin P. Snyder. This lithograph is similar to two prints appearing in Wainwright, about which he writes: "Thomas H. Powers and William Weightman became partners in 1847 or 1848 and built up on of the city's major industrial works, becoming one of the largest manufacturing chemists in the world. Their factory ... is first listed in 1857. It manufactured oil of vitriol, aquafortis, nitric and muriatic acids, Epsom salts, copperas, blue vitriol, and alum" (Wainwright). The present print presents the factory buildings with two insets depicting the "Tartaric and Citrus Acid Department" and the "Laboratory for Fine Chemicals," located in the city at Ninth and Parrish Streets.
